New gallery
Designed by Koolhaas’ office OMA, the NAI Treasury is as striking as the NAI Collection itself. A 250m2 space is created in the depths of our catacombs which only gradually reveals the architectural marvels. Once you have reached the heart of glass, you will find scale models, drawings, sketches and photographs from the rich collection of the NAI such as Berlage’s travelling sketchbook of Italy from around 1900, Koolhaas’ studies for the Kunsthal, and models of Rietveld’s Zig-Zag chair.
Dutch architectural tradition
The NAI Treasury is divided into six thematic clusters that refer to the Dutch architectural tradition. One of those typical Dutch traditions is social housing. The unique cooperation between government, private housing corporations and architects repeatedly led to new and unexpected solutions, such as the housing blocks by De Klerk (Amsterdam School) that were also called 'palaces for the workers'. Another tradition is the experimental urge of Dutch architects that has led time and again to innovations in the architecture of the last two hundred years, such as the world-famous experiments of De Stijl.
Cooperation
The NAI Treasury is sponsored by Bouwfonds Cultuurfonds, Agentschap NL, SNS REAAL Fonds, Stichting Bevordering van Volkskracht, and Stichting Elise Mathilde Fonds.
From September 10 onwards, you can view over sixty highlights from our vast collection in the Treasury, the NAI's new permanent exhibition. All these extraordinary objects, categorized in six thematic clusters, shed light on specific Dutch traits - each in a different way. In the weeks leading up to the Treasury opening, we will introduce the exhibition's six main themes and their key objects online. This week's theme is: Experimental.
