M.A. and J. van Nieukerken. Staircase for Bataafsche Petroleum Maatschappij, The Hague, 1917. NAI Collection / NIEU 271
In the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, the work of the Van Nieukerken brothers was very popular with well-healed and highly influential clients. By the late 1920s, however, their artisanal, historicist style of architecture went out of favour, making way for more modern trends. Both governments and private clients turned their back on the firm. When the Bataafsche Petroleum Maatschappij petrol company wanted to build a new office for the Bataafsche Import Maatschappij, the Van Nieukerkens were passed over and architect J.J.P. Oud was given the assignment.

The NAI was formed in 1988 by a merger of The Stichting
Architectuurmuseum, the Nederlands Documentatiecentrum voor de
Bouwkunst, and Stichting Wonen. These three organizations placed their
collections in the care of the new institute. The history of the
collection however, goes much further back.
