![M.A. and J. van Nieukerken. Tiles for the Bataafsche Petroleum Maatschappij, The Hague, 1917. NAI Collection / NIEU 270. Despite the emergence of modern movements such as Functionalism, the Van Nieukerken brothers stuck to their traditional, artisanal and historicising style of architecture. The Algemeen Handelsblad newspaper wrote the following about the Bataafsche Petroleum Maatschappij in 1925: “We do not admire the imitation antique of the Van Nieukerkens in the least and we continue to lament the fact that the Bataafsche [..] did not understand how absurd it is to have a hypermodern company housed in an architectural structure copied from templates three hundred years old.” M.A. and J. van Nieukerken.
