Acclaimed architectural historian and theorist Beatriz Colomina (Princeton University) will deliver a lecture on the background to Playboy Architecture, 1953-1979 on 3 July 2013 at The New Institute. Fragments of this exhibition are part of The New Institute’s summer program The Ruin. Playboy Architecture shows how Playboy magazine identified architecture and design as important instruments for the development of a new identity for the American man. Colomina curated this exhibition, which was previously presented in Bureau Europa in Maastricht. Following the lecture, Dirk van den Heuvel (Delft University of Technology) will enter into discussion with Colomina. > Read more...

More than 20 years after the founding of the Rotterdam architectural office MVRDV, the first monograph on its realised buildings is being published. MVRDV Buildings deviates from convention by considering architectural works from the user’s perspective. The New Institute will host a launch of the book on Thursday 4 July. The New Institute in Rotterdam hosted the annual L'Enfant Lecture. The lecture was organised by the American Planning Association (APA) and was part of a professional study tour in the Netherlands to explore how protection methods can be used and applied to coastal regions throughout the United States. The lecture "Planning Adaption for Climate Change" was presented by Renée Jones-Bos. > Read more...

The Boswijk is a care centre for the elderly with dementia, designed in close collaboration with the client and with a strong vision as starting point. The centre was to be of a scale that related to its users, and not to be like a traditional nursing home.
