San Franciscans this month will have the chance to hear their leading mayoral candidates tackle an always-volatile topic in their town, the built environment, in a special forum discussion. The forum doubles as the opening event in the chapter's Architecture and the City Festival. The theme is Architecture of Consequence, which is also the name of a festival exhibition at the AIASF offices at 130 Sutter St. that will pair socially themed work by local firms with similarly ambitious projects from the Netherlands Architecture Institute.
The two-hour face-off won't be a formal debate, but it's a venue to nudge the candidates beyond platitudes with regards to everything from historic preservation and height limits to the balancing act between the push to create substantial new housing within the city as a counterpart to sprawl, and the desire of many residents for things to stay the way they are.
The forum is at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 29 at the City Club, 155 Sansome St. Each candidate will have a two-minute statement followed by questions aplenty. It was organized by the city's chapter of the American Institute of Architects; I'll be the moderator, doing my best to steer participants away from planned talking points.

Good grief. Sending positive thoughts your way. Is there a bigger, better hospital anywhere nearby? Can you safely travel to it, if so? Send us an update as soon as you can.
