The ‘Education’ series offers an overview of design-related training courses that focus on how architecture and urban planning can help to solve (pressing) contemporary social issues.
In this feature: Master Urban Emergencies in Delft (The Netherlands).
Urban Emergencies in Haïti
Who is the course for?
Master students at the Architecture Faculty.
Aim of the course
In the wake of large-scale natural disasters, governments need to reconstruct all levels of society as soon as possible. Ordinary life needs to be reinstated at the earliest opportunity and schools, shops and homes are flung up almost overnight. Victims are often given improvised accommodation that is intended to act as a stop-gap until permanent housing can be provided; but in many cases, this ‘temporary shelter’ ends up being their long-term home. Such band-aid solutions create an urban environment that won’t be able to withstand next natural catastrophe, either. When the professionals arrive two or three years after the emergency, with an effective strategy and vision for reconstruction, they can often do little else than work with the infrastructure that has sprung up in the meantime. Alexander Vollebregt – lecturer and researcher in Urbanism – argues in favour of decelerating the pace of the reconstruction process, and first considering strategies for a more sustainably built environment that is designed to withstand eventualities in the long term. The aim of the Urban Emergencies-project is to develop a practicable framework for contingency situations such as these.

How do you go about rebuilding a nation that has been ravaged by a natural disaster? In many cases, the reconstruction process is haphazard and can create problems for the future. Five TU Delft graduates and their tutor intend to do things differently in Haiti.

I can't think of a more interesting desk than this. What a coeiorsatvnn piece that would be. You should do this I think. So unusual & cool. You could start with an end table first to get the hang of it. I think the most unusual desk I've seen was in downtown Denver at a boutique hotel, Hotel Teatro. This was a painting project for the hotel manager. His desk top was a gigantic old hotel door covered with a glass top since it was so old, rustic & ornate. The legs looked like huge sawhorses but I can't quite remember the details. The walls were 100+ year old bricks so it all was just too cool for words. I remembered staring at this thing forever. I wish I would have taken a photo of it.
I thought I'd have to read a book for a dirsovecy like this!
When I moved to FL my mom and grandma gave me all of my ormtnenas to take with me and now I am so excited to decorate our tree with those ormtnenas this year. My grandma has always bought me an ornament each year since I was born just like yours and I have a great collection for my own tree now. It helps me to see those ormtnenas when I'm missing family back home. Your tree looks great!Stephanie http://akzegganp.com nscdkpuwgly [link=http://crrzgsrubuo.com]crrzgsrubuo[/link]
funny because this year I acaneditclly wore the POS shoes I usually wear down to the beach (which are the hiking shoes I always wear, but the worn out version) and didn't even notice until I got back - no wonder gallerists avoided me like the plague this year - I'm gonna start doing that EVERY YEAR
Love it Tam! But bright cooruls in the kitchen aren't necessarily not grown up. Think of Kitchen Aid and Nespresso machines! The new Russel Hobbs range in colour is just gorgeous and I think totally worth it http://bubfqbhi.com qxppjgapwx [link=http://tkmtwtyrrqc.com]tkmtwtyrrqc[/link]

Daniel, did not mean to hit a nerve with you. Wearing a black kippah and ignoring the fact that one belongs in Israel is the utter most forms of hyprcoisy. Of course no one knows the day, but we sure have clues that even the author of this blog is screaming of. I love it when we ignore our own warnings. Guess history repeats itself when we ignored the warnings of the shoah. Have a wonderful week. http://vhllmtyx.com earuazsn [link=http://mbqwyd.com]mbqwyd[/link]
