On the eve of the recently announced renovation of the entrance area of the NAI, the organisation is confronted with an unexpected constructional problem. Cracks have appeared in the walls and floor of the basement, which is mainly used for storage. It is clear by now that the basement floor, which is a few metres below the water table, is slowly rising. This is because the anchor piles no longer function. These anchor piles are situated beneath the central part of the museum building and compensate the upward pressure of the ground water. > Read more...
The exhibition ‘Disputed City’ is over. After a successful period with many enthusiastic visitors, the main gallery of the NAI is now empty. The Netherlands Architecture Institute opened its doors at the Museumpark in Rotterdam in 1993, now almost twenty years ago. Since then, hundreds of thousands of visitors have crossed the bridge into the striking building designed by the acclaimed architect Jo Coenen. There were two winners in the sixth edition of the biennial Public Space European Prize this year. The tied first prize went to the open air library in Magdeburg, Germany by KARO* in collaboration with Architektur+Netzwerk, and to the Norwegian Opera and Ballet House in Oslo, Norway by the Snohetta firm of architects.
