There
were two winners in the sixth edition of the biennial Public Space European
Prize this year. The tied first prize went to the open air library in
Magdeburg, Germany by KARO* in collaboration with Architektur+Netzwerk, and to
the Norwegian Opera and Ballet House in Oslo, Norway by the Snohetta firm of
architects. The official presentation will take place on 11 June in Barcelona.
The
open air library in Magdeburg is a very accessible public space intended to
enhance the city. Projects like this are intended to counteract the shrinkage
of cities in former East Germany. The library was praised during the
presentation above all for its recycling aspect. The Opera House in Oslo won
the Mies van der Rohe Award last year, when it was praised in its totality. The
Public Space award drew particular attention to the innovative roof of the
building on which people can walk.
The Dutch project Urban Activators; theatre podium & bridge
Grotekerkplein in Rotterdam by Atelier Kempe Thill received an honourable
mention. Honourable mentions also went to the projects Paseo Marítimo de la
playa Poniente in Benidorm, Passage 56 in Paris, and Casetas de pescadores en
El puerto in Cangas do Morrazo, Spain.
This year’s jury, chaired by the Spanish architect Rafael Moneo, consists of
Severi Blomstedt, director of the Museum of Finnish Architecture in Helsinki,
Ole Bouman, director of the Netherlands Architecture Institute in Rotterdam,
Sarah Mineko Ichioka, director of the Architecture Foundation and the London
Festival of Architecture, Francis Rambert, architectural critic and director of

The exhibition "INbetween" in Gallery 3 of the NAI shows the winning design and a selection of the submissions for the 2004 OAP. Different sorts of maps, such as a subsidence map or a chewing gum map, show traces of use of public space and focus attention on the social and cultural aspects of this environment.
