Ole Bouman, director of the Netherlands Architecture Institute (NAI), was presented with the ‘2011 Shenzhen & Hong Kong Bi-city Biennale of Urbanism/Architecture Organizer Committee Special Award’ on Sunday 18 March 2012. The NAI was awarded the prize for the exhibition ‘Housing with a Mission’, the Dutch entry for the China Shenzhen & Hong Kong Bi-city architecture Biennale 2011.
The award ceremony took place in the China Urban Construction Design & Research Institute in Shenzhen. On receiving the prize, Ole Bouman said: “It is striking to see that Chinese society is becoming increasingly confident in the cultural meaning of architecture. The Netherlands has a wealth of tradition and experience it can share, but also needs to renew its own faith in what architecture can mean. The award confirms our conviction that this interaction can foster extraordinary achievements.”
The exhibition won the prize for best pavilion in recognition of its substantial contribution to Chinese architecture. The exhibition features the models of ten designs for affordable housing in China. The designs in ‘Housing with a Mission ’ resulted from the Matchmaking Programme China , a co-production between the NAI and Dutch and Chinese architects.
